Position description
The Department of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine,
invites applications for a Specialist position in the Associate, or
Full Specialist series in the laboratory of Rami Khayat, MD. The
lab is focused on investigating the cardiovascular consequences of
sleep apnea. The research includes in-vitro studies of the impact
of intermittent hypoxia on endothelial cell dysfunction along with
microscopy and PCR studies of vascular specimen obtained from
patients.
The ideal candidate will oversee the daily operations in this
translational research Sleep laboratory including new member
training, laboratory compliance, budget management and purchasing;
participates in planning, designing and managing research projects;
performs analysis of research literature; assists with preparation
of grants, publications, abstracts, and presentations; orders and
maintains lab supplies and equipment; performs experiments includes
preparing biochemical and molecular biology reagents and performing
various molecular biology and immunologic assays; participates in
clinical and translational research including acquiring biologic
specimens, and isolating peripheral blood cells.
Essential duties:
Process samples and execute experiments on human tissue and blood
including freshly procured vascular and subcutaneous tissue; blood,
and serum; performs molecular biology procedures and immunologic
assays including: Western blot analysis, immunohistochemistry,
ELISA, PCR for mRNA analysis; performs laboratory techniques to
isolate endothelial cells, peripheral blood cell lines; and perform
and maintain cell cultures
Participates in planning, design, implementation and management of
research projects; plans, designs and executes experiments
including confocal microscopy and immunohistochemistry techniques;
laser capture transfections sequencing, transfection of cell lines
with DNA constructs, DNA extraction, cell separation/cultures,
cytokines measurement, and immunoblots;
Primarily responsible for daily laboratory operations and
laboratory safety compliance; orders and maintains laboratory
supplies and lab equipment; maintains laboratory notebooks for
quality control and analysis; performs other duties as assigned;
prepares and maintains stock biochemical and molecular biology
reagents;
Collects, analyzes and interprets research data; performs critical
analysis of research literature; assists with preparation of
grants, publications, abstracts, and presentations; collaborates
with principal investigator to develop general goals of new
research projects; constructs manuscripts;
Participate and assist in humans studies including vascular
reactivity studies and biopsy procedures; occasionally contact
research participants and participate in follow up visit in
collaboration with research coordinators.
Rank and salary will be determined based on qualifications and
experience. Initial appointments are for one year and renewal is
based on availability of support.

Qualifications:
Associate rank - should possess a master's degree (or equivalent
degree) or five to ten years of experience demonstrating expertise
in the relevant specialization. Associate Specialists are normally
expected to have a record of academic accomplishments, including
contributions to published or in-press research in the field and a
demonstrated record of University and/or public service.
Specialist rank - should possess a terminal degree ( or equivalent
degree) or ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise
in the relevant specialization. Specialists at full rank are
normally expected to have a significant record of academic
accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press
research in the field, professional recognition in the field, and a
demonstrated record of University and/or public service.
Preferred qualifications:
Ph.D of Science or equivalent combination of education and
experience in biomedical research field.
Applicants who are Spanish speaking are preferred
