Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Mother Care:

Assess and monitor the health of the mother after delivery, including vital signs, pain management, and recovery from anesthesia or surgery (if applicable).


Provide emotional support and address any concerns related to postpartum recovery.


Educate the mother on self-care, including care of stitches (if applicable), activity level, and signs of infection.


Support breastfeeding, providing guidance on latch, positioning, and common challenges.


Administer medications and manage IVs as prescribed.


Assist with the management of postpartum complications such as excessive bleeding, high blood pressure, or infection.


Offer counseling and support for mental health concerns such as postpartum depression and anxiety.




Newborn Care:

Monitor newborns for health and development, including weight, feeding, and early physical assessments.


Perform routine newborn screenings, including hearing, vision, and blood tests.


Provide guidance to parents on newborn care, including diapering, bathing, and safe sleep practices.


Assist with newborn feeding, including breastfeeding and formula feeding support.




Patient Education & Communication:

Provide detailed discharge instructions to the mother, covering topics such as care of the baby, postpartum exercises, dietary recommendations, and warning signs for potential complications.


Communicate effectively with the healthcare team, including obstetricians, pediatricians, and social workers, to ensure a holistic approach to care.


Provide emotional support for the family, addressing concerns, and helping them feel confident in the transition to parenthood.




Documentation & Compliance:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, ensuring documentation complies with hospital standards and legal requirements.


Follow hospital protocols for infection control and patient safety.






Qualifications:

Education:

Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.




Licensure:

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.




Experience:

Previous experience in postpartum or maternal health nursing is preferred but not required.




Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.


Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification may be required.


Advanced certifications, such as in lactation consulting (IBCLC) or postpartum care, are a plus.






Qualifications:

Strong clinical knowledge in maternal and infant care.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.


Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.


Ability to educate and empower families during a critical time in their lives.
