Great American is one of the few carriers with a dedicated Property & Inland Marine Division (P&IM) and, in the industry segments it covers, with expertise second to none. The P&IM Division is currently searching for a Production Underwriter who will handle a territory of Arizona, Nevada, Southern California, and Northern California. Work experience in this territory is preferred. This individual will be responsible for developing and maintaining a book of business. They will be responsible for quoting new business, renewals, handling endorsements, and other customer service related issues. In addition, this individual will have marketing responsibilities, including visits to their their agents/brokers, developing new relationships within our existing producer base, and new appointments. The underwriter will be responsible for addressing any loss ratio problems and participating in sale planning meetings.
An ideal candidate will excel at developing strong relationships with internal and external customers, have proficient underwriting skills, and be responsible for generating new business. This position will be in our branch office Orange, CA which offers a hybrid/flex work environment.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Has responsibility for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives.
  • Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
  • Maintains a high level of customer service.
  • Analyzes coverage and limit requests and decides what terms to offer.
  • Prices business in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
  • Orders and screens miscellaneous reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, such as Motor Vehicle reports, loss history reports, credit checks, outside inspections, loss control, etc.
  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Visits agents, brokers, and producers in order to retain existing accounts, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities in support of divisional objectives.
  • Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
  • Develops relationships with agents & brokers through telephone interactions.
  • Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Job Requirements
    • Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
    • Field of Study: Business, Liberal Arts, or a related discipline.
    • Experience: 6 months to 3 years of related experience. Beginning coursework toward certification in area of expertise preferred; appropriate certifications could include Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS) or Associate of Risk Management (ARM).
